June 11, 2025 – Filipino supermarkets across the United States are welcoming the return of popular condiments Mang Tomas, Jufran, and UFC after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officially cleared the sauces for import and sale.
The clearance follows a months-long restriction that began in late 2023, when the FDA flagged certain imported versions of the sauces for labeling and ingredient concerns. These products were listed under Import Alert 99-19, which subjected them to detention without physical examination.
As of June 10, 2025, the FDA has removed the sauces from the alert list, confirming that specific versions of the products now meet U.S. safety and labeling standards.
Supermarkets in Virginia and Maryland that cater to the Filipino community say the absence of these sauces has been deeply felt by customers over the past year. One Filipino supermarket in Virginia say they have not had stock of these items since last year. With inventory now available again, retailers expressed relief that a regulatory body exists to ensure only safe products are sold. They emphasized how difficult it had been to meet customer demand without supply and are glad they can finally restock shelves with these beloved staples.
A Filipino supermarket in Maryland said they had to repeatedly explain to disappointed customers why the sauces weren’t available. Now, with the FDA lifting the alert, the store said it’s a big help for business and for the community. They noted that as soon as news spread, loyal customers started returning specifically to check if the products were back in stock.
The absence of Mang Tomas, Jufran, and UFC sauces had left a noticeable void in Filipino households and restaurants across the country. Known for their unique flavor profiles and cultural significance, these condiments are widely used in Filipino cuisine and are a comfort food essential for many.
Retailers and distributors are now working quickly to replenish supplies. Shoppers can expect to see the products returning to stores over the next few weeks, marking a welcome end to the months-long shortage.
