Filipino-Americans commemorate Bataan Death March in Alexandria, Virginia

Alexandria, VA — In a moving display of remembrance, unity, and cultural pride, the Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project (FilVetREP) recently brought together Filipino Americans and supporters for “Remembrances Along the River,” an event aimed at honoring veterans while reinforcing community ties across generations.

Held as part of FilVetREP’s ongoing advocacy and education efforts, the gathering served as both a tribute to Filipino World War II veterans and a living testament to the resilience of the Filipino American community. Participants came together not only to remember the sacrifices of the past, but also to ensure that these stories continue to be passed down.

Honoring a Legacy Long Overdue

FilVetREP, a national nonprofit initiative, has spent more than a decade working to secure recognition for the more than 260,000 Filipino soldiers who served under the U.S. flag during World War II. Despite their service, many veterans were historically denied benefits and recognition, a gap the organization continues to address through education, ceremonies, and public events.

“Remembrances Along the River” reflects that mission—blending commemoration with community-building. Through storytelling, shared meals, and moments of reflection, attendees honored veterans whose contributions were once overlooked but are now increasingly recognized as central to U.S. and Filipino history.

Building Community Through Memory

More than a memorial, the event highlighted the importance of intergenerational connection. Families, youth, veterans’ descendants, and community leaders gathered in a shared space where personal histories intersected with national narratives.

FilVetREP leaders emphasized that remembrance is not just about looking back—it is about strengthening identity and unity in the present. Events like this create opportunities for younger Filipino Americans to engage with their heritage while deepening appreciation for the sacrifices that shaped their community.

That sense of continuity is especially urgent as the number of living Filipino WWII veterans continues to decline. According to available data, only a small number remain alive today, underscoring the importance of preserving their stories while firsthand accounts are still possible.

A Continuing Mission

“Remembrances Along the River” is part of a broader effort by FilVetREP to ensure that Filipino veterans are never forgotten. Beyond commemorative events, the organization continues to lead initiatives such as awarding Congressional Gold Medals, maintaining a national registry of veterans, and advocating for policy changes to address historical injustices.

The gathering also reinforced a broader message: that community strength is built not only through shared culture, but through shared memory.

As attendees reflected along the river, the symbolism was clear—like the flowing water, the stories of Filipino American veterans continue to move forward, carried by a community committed to honoring its past while shaping its future.
