Side by Side Alliance Expands Global Impact Through Livelihood Training and Community Partnerships

Occoquan, Virginia — A Virginia-based nonprofit is redefining how international aid creates lasting change, focusing less on short-term relief and more on long-term empowerment. Side by Side Alliance, founded in 2019, continues to expand its reach through grassroots partnerships, workforce training, and community-driven development in Eastern Visayas (Leyte & Samar), while building strong support among Filipino-American communities in the DMV region.

From Disaster Relief to Long-Term Empowerment

The Side by Side Alliance’s origins trace back to the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. Despite a massive global response, many vulnerable communities remained trapped in poverty years later.

That reality led the founders to rethink traditional aid models. Rather than focusing on short-term relief, Side by Side Alliance built its mission around long-term partnerships, equipping individuals with practical, in-demand skills that create sustainable livelihoods.

Working alongside institutions such as Eastern Visayas State University, the Side by Side Alliance delivers hands-on training programs in trades like carpentry, plumbing, welding, and electrical installation, skills that can elevate individuals from day laborers to certified professionals.

DMV Community Engagement Fuels Awareness

That mission is increasingly resonating locally. At the annual Fil-Am Spring Fest in Fairfax, Virginia, Side by Side Alliance has found a strong connection with the Filipino-American community.

Side by Side Alliance described the event as one of their most meaningful engagements in 2025, noting that many attendees immediately recognized the handwoven banig mats showcased at their booth, products crafted by artisans in Samar.

Visitors familiar with the region were especially encouraged to learn that weavers from Saob Cave are active partners in the Side by Side Alliance’s livelihood programs. Through bulk purchasing and fair partnerships, these artisans contribute directly to fundraising efforts, with proceeds reinvested into community development initiatives in the Philippines.

The response in the DMV, Side by Side Alliance say, reflects a deeper cultural connection, one that blends heritage, craftsmanship, and collective impact.

A Story of Transformation: From Survival to Entrepreneurship

Among the most powerful examples of the Side by Side Alliance’s impact is Reyan, a father from Leyte who once struggled to provide even daily meals for his family.

When Side by Side Alliance first met him in 2021, Reyan relied on irregular labor and, at times, foraged for food in nearby areas. With limited access to training or opportunity, stable employment seemed out of reach.

That changed when he enrolled in the Side by Side Alliance’s IMPACT training program. Through a two-year course, developed in partnership with university faculty, Reyan gained hands-on experience in multiple trades before specializing in plumbing. After passing a national certification exam, he secured steady work with a contractor.

Today, Reyan is the owner of “Mr. Plumber of Leyte,” a growing business that now employs others in his community. What began as survival has become sustainability and leadership. His work now supports not just his own family, but multiple households.

His children, once at risk of malnutrition, are now in school with long-term educational prospects. His story reflects the Side by Side Alliance’s philosophy: participants are not “beneficiaries,” but partners in transformation.

Measuring Impact Beyond Metrics

While Side by Side Alliance tracks data through SMART goals and evaluation frameworks, leaders emphasize that the most meaningful outcomes go beyond numbers.

Programs like ARISE, which trains women in organic gardening and fertilizer production, provide measurable outputs, participation rates, crop yields, and project completion. But the deeper impact is seen in reduced food insecurity, stronger family units, and renewed hope.

“Success isn’t just what we can measure,” explains Laura Barbee, the Side by Side Alliance’s Executive Director. “It’s what we see in the lives of families, less hunger, more stability, and communities growing stronger together.”

In-Demand Skills Driving Change

Across partner communities, demand continues to grow for technical skills such as plumbing, welding, and electrical work, fields that offer stable income and long-term career growth.

At the same time, agricultural training is proving equally impactful. Programs that teach families how to grow their own food are improving nutrition and resilience, with entire households participating in maintaining gardens and sustaining harvests.

Building Trust, Expanding Opportunity

Early challenges included overcoming skepticism from communities that had previously experienced ineffective or exploitative aid. Over time, consistent delivery, transparency, and relationship-building helped the Side by Side Alliance earn trust.

Today, that trust is opening new doors. Many expansion opportunities now come directly from community referrals, driven by visible, generational change.

Still, funding remains a key challenge. Like many nonprofits, Side by Side Alliance depends on donor support to meet growing demand for its programs.

How to Get Involved

For those looking to support, the Side by Side Alliance highlights several ways to make a meaningful impact:

  • Attend events like Fil-Am Spring Fest and connect directly with the team
  • Purchase handcrafted banig products, with proceeds funding livelihood programs
  • Become a monthly donor or give a one-time contribution
  • Support through advocacy, prayer, and community awareness
